SO 10 Episode 02: Almost Home: A Conversation with Mirabai Bush

How did mindfulness become part of everyday life in America? Mirabai Bush has been at the center of that story for more than 50 years. A longtime collaborator of Ram Dass, co-founder of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society, and co-creator of Google's Search Inside Yourself program, she shares how a trip to India in 1970 led her to Ram Dass, Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein, and other pioneers who helped bring Buddhist meditation and contemplative practice to the West.

Mirabai reflects on introducing mindfulness into nonprofits and companies like Google, where emotional intelligence became just as important as technical skill. She shares insights about compassion, leadership, activism, and why contemplative activism could shape how we live and the choices we make. Her words and spirit offer a beautiful merger of wisdom and love.

At 86, Mirabai has valuable perspectives on aging, friendship, legacy, and death. Drawing from a lifetime of teaching and her memoir Almost Home, she shares what she's learned about looking within, living with intention, and making peace with life's final chapter.
